From the lens of my Hycean world, I have come to understand that to be an artist also comes with the gift of being an alchemist. I established the foundation of my artwork from the knowing that we already have everything we need. And oftentimes, our problems are rooted in an unwillingness to alchemize the resources and tools that are right in front of us.

This experiential knowing is directly connected to the start of my journey into creating solar engraved artwork in 2017 at a time where my financial resources were limited but my imagination and ability to be resourceful within my local community knew no bounds. Since I already had an innate understanding that waste is a man made creation, I tapped into the local economy of second hand goods which led me to others who gifted me literally everything I needed to create. Besides this moment, I’ve always personally been inclined to prioritize local & ethically sourced goods, so using things like reclaimed wood, earth and mineral pigments and regenerative sources of paint aka sunshine is simply an extension of how I prefer to live life. My distinct discipline of collaborating with the sun is how I pay tribute to the natural worlds; those that have long communicated through glyphs and a way to remind us of our connection to something bigger than ourselves.

Often, I will hint at a “time” signature in my pieces with a N:0W symbol, inviting viewers to access real time via the present moment. It’s a choice to be present and it is this choosing that weaves the fabric for each of our experiences and life stories from the subtle to material realms.
